“I loved that it was all for more than just looking at: It was meant to cast spells, heal, protect villages from invaders, prevent or assist pregnancy, guide one through the afterlife.” — Jerry Saltz

“If any creative person has that space and has that quiet, where they can stay up til midnight without their cellphone and be alone with their thoughts, I think they’re gonna flourish.” -Don Hertzfeldt

“Then I would have to grow up, stand naked before this immense brutal universe, and step into the largeness of this journey, my journey.” -James Hollis

“I guess all I can do is embrace the pandemonium. Embrace the unique insanity of being here, now.” -Eleanor Shelstrop, The Good Place

I like the idea of art having a utilitarian function, especially during these times, as maybe what can save you is a few words upon a page, splotches of color on a canvas, or odd notes waiting to be structured into composition. But even moreso I like how Saltz sees it, as a tool breaking the wall of the ordinary, tearing open the fabric of our reality, and serving to not only get to that other dimension, but help us there. I don’t know what I’m doing in this reality, this pandemonium, but I think I can manage on the other side…
