Max Rebo, Red Ball Jet Organ Player
Famed percussionist Max Rebo tragically passed away Saturday, due to injuries sustained in the explosion of Jabba the Hutt’s sail barge. He was 36 light years old.
Known as the easygoing bandleader of the popular Max Rebo band, Rebo was also lauded for his freewheeling, inventive style as a player of the red ball jet organ, doople, and Tatooine sand drum. In fact, it was Rebo who invented the doople, a variation of the moople keyboard that consisted of softened meteor rocks filled with the red salt of Crait and tied together with the skin of Bantha fodder. Rebo’s genius for invention extended to his playing, which was marked by lively ten-fingered playing and the occasional use of his signature long blue schnozz. He was as talented a bandleader as he was player, with singer Sy Snootles, a frequent collaborator, saying “he was a kind and gentle soul who could also play like a porgy out of Mustafar.”
Born a not so long time ago on the planet Orto, Max Rebo would have had a mostly quiet and unassuming childhood were it not for his infamous brother, Azool Phantelle. But let’s not dwell on Azool here alright? Rebo displayed an early propensity for music, playing complicated compositions by Max Roach at a young age with a couple pencils and the back of his school desk. In junior high he formed the prog-rock quintet Prot0Frot0, which received some nice regional press before being screwed out of a battle of the bands contest due to a disagreement over whether future Earth symphonies could be played over soft jazz synthesizer beats. He went on to enroll in the prestigious music school Burttly, but dropped out when he had a steamy love affair with Snootles and formed his eponymous group.
While recording his triple platinum smash Study in Blue on hiatus from his band, Rebo was known for taking little breaks in the evening and staring out at Tatooine’s famed binary sunset. Of these interludes his astromech droid, B#-BBop, tearfully noted “boop boop boop beep beep… BEEEEP.”
